The time of the production may or may not be related to the event depicted in the picture. This is done because post cards are produced in bulk and the sold over a period of time. Post cards have been dated with a “c.” or circa placed along with the date of the post mark. Is the post card to be dated by the date of the picture, or is it to be dated by the date the card was produced or by the date of the post mark? Should greeting cards be dated by the date of publication or by the date of the event or post mark? In dating this collection I have arbitrarily chosen a scheme which seems to make the most sense to me. The dating of post cards and greeting cards poses serious problems for the archivist. These generally date from 1940 to 1970 and the subjects tend to be Catholic churches or cathedrals.

Another identifiable group of post cards came from the family (or estate) of Misses Marie and Pauline Lange. Harrison Smith and are dated from 1900 to 1920. Many of the post cards and greeting cards came from the family of Judge J. However, the bulk of the cards date from 1900 to 1940. The cards range in age from the 1870s to the 1980s.
